Rhythm & Light

I recently stumbled upon an old memory stick with the original photographs taken for a group project from Art College called Rhythm and Light. We spent a couple of weeks experimenting with light, taking inspiration from light artists such as Lichtfaktor, and we used these three final images in the Rhythm and Light evening exhibition. These were projected onto three light boards which really made the light shine out from the photos.

I finally finished the painting last night for my mum's colleague. He actually discovered this bug, which is called an Oxycera fallenii, and my mum and her colleagues thought this would be a nice leaving present. Not the funnest painting I've ever had to do, but hopefully they'll be pleased with it!

Also working on a painting for my mum's colleague as a retirement present...turns out he's quite a prominent figure in the bug world, so I've been asked to paint him a picture of this bug that he actually discovered himself. Just pencil outline at the moment, getting some new paintbrushes tomorrow so I'll hopefully have it finished soon.

New Scientist Magazine Illustrations

In my third year, for my final project of the year, I was required to produce a magazine supplement for New Scientist magazine, entitled 'Top 10 Scientific Objects That Changed the World.' I chose to create a concertina magazine to show all of my objects illustrated as running through a race, so that the reader could follow the whole race as a whole, instead of a regular magazine layout. Below you can see the concertina as a whole as well as a selection of the original illustrations.

Illustrations for Brothers Grimm - Little Red Riding Hood

Here are the six double page illustrations I created for the Brothers Grimm fairy tale - Little Red Riding Hood, for a third year brief.

I chose to capture the darkness of the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales by using quite traditional illustration techniques. Playing on my strengths of hand-drawn pencil illustration, I combined this with the use of just one other colour, red. To take this contrast even further I chose to illustrate the character of Little Red through the use of fabric. The identity of Little Red is not revealed throughout the six illustrations, with her face always remaining covered or turned away from the audience.

University Campaign Week Banners

In March 2011 during my final year, my friend ran for VP of Student Services in the Nottingham Trent Student Union Elections. For this, she asked me to paint a couple of banners. I painted two which included my cartoon-style portraits of her, and these two banners were put up at two campuses at University.

Book Jacket Design - Noughts & Crosses Series

I designed these book covers for the first minor brief of third year at NTU. We were required to design book covers for a series of three books by the same author, and I chose the Noughts & Crosses series by Malorie Blackman. This series covers a number of issues, but above all things, this story is about racism. My book covers use symbols to create the characters that are depicted in the books, and the bold red further symbolises the many emotions that are explored in the books. This colour was chosen as the only primary colour in the series as it holds a number of meanings itself, which relate to a number of issues and emotions which are explored in the story, such as love, death and revenge.
